Fundraiser For A Very Special Woman

Posted on Updated on

My mom is the most beautiful, sweet, kind, loving person I have ever met. She has always been my biggest fan, my best friend, mother, therapist, shoulder to cry on, & hero all in one. Basically, she means the world to me!!

When my mom was twenty-two she found out that she had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.  This meant her having to go through chemotherapy and radiation therapy in order to beat the cancer. Being the fighter that she is she kicked cancer’s butt!!  Her Dr. told us that in ten to fifteen years she would start seeing the side effects from the radiation.  The main side effects are Heart and/or lung problems, tooth decay, cell damage around the site, and the possibility that her cancer could come back.  We had a few cancer scares over the past ten to twenty years, but we always received good news in the end.

Things were going pretty well until May of 2014.  She started having really bad pains in her chest, and they continued to get worse.  She went to the ER one night because the pain was so bad.  We then found out that they would have to do an open heart surgery with a double bypass.  Our world was turned upside down!  After spending a few weeks in the hospital they released her.  She was sore at first, but was starting to feel better again.  A few months later she started having the same pains as before. Mom made another trip to the ER, and was then diagnosed with Heart Angina.  They put two stents in, and she spent a few more nights in the hospital.  She started feeling better for a month or so, and then the pains came back for the third time.

Over the past year she has been in and out of the hospital with the same chest pains, and the Drs. have been sending her home with a different type of medicine, or putting another stent in. She now has SEVEN stents!! This gets very frustrating!  I didn’t understand why they were putting in so many stents, but she would only feel good for two to three weeks.  This past month her heart Dr. diagnosed her with Conjunctive Heart Failure, and told her that the stents are acting as bandages which is why she feels great for the first two to three weeks after the stent(s) are put in, and then she is back to hurting.  He also told her that she needs to get to Houston ASAP to see a doctor there about getting a Heart Transplant.  Deep down we knew this day was going to come.  However, you can never prepare yourself for news like this!
I know my mom will beat every obstacle that is thrown her way.  She is so strong, and will continue to fight. 🙂

Craig Morgan’s song “Tough” fits my mom perfectly.

“We sat there five years ago
The doctors let us know
The test showed
She’d have to fight to live, I broke down and cried
She held me and said it’s gonna be alright
She wore that wig to church
Pink ribbon pinned there on her shirt
No room for fear, full of faith
Hands held high singing Amazing Grace
Never once complained, refusing to give up
And I thought I was tough”
